Ecovista is worth considering when a compact pod does not give you enough usable room, but you do not need a self-contained residential dwelling. Ecovista is perfect for homeowners who value modern yet sustainable choices.
Its 30sqm footprint can provide dedicated space for:
The important question is not simply whether 30sqm fits. It is whether that space can be positioned and configured appropriately for your property and intended use.
With more floor area than a compact backyard pod, Ecovista gives you greater flexibility in how the room can be organised.
Set up a dedicated work area with room for desks, storage, equipment or meetings without having to use a bedroom or dining table inside the house.
Use the additional floor area for painting, craft, design or other projects that need both workspace and storage.
A larger open floor area can provide more freedom for yoga, stretching, exercise or personal wellness routines.
Your studio does not necessarily need a single purpose. Ecovista’s 30sqm footprint provides greater scope to organise separate zones for work, creativity or downtime.
Ecovista is designed as more than an empty backyard shell. Its current specification combines a prefabricated structural system with insulation, finished interiors, kitchen and bathroom inclusions and the practical essentials needed to create a complete backyard space.
Prefabricated steel subfloor and wall framing provide the structural base for the studio, supported by the Surefoot foundation system.
Insulation across the floor, walls and roof helps support thermal comfort throughout Melbourne’s changing seasons.
Double-glazed aluminium awning windows and a hinged entry door bring natural light and ventilation into the studio while supporting thermal performance.
Colorbond roofing and vertical cladding give Ecovista its contemporary exterior, with a selection of colours available to suit different homes and backyard settings.
The current specification includes kitchen cabinetry, stone benchtop, tiled splashback, sink and mixer, together with bathroom tiling, vanity, shower fittings and toilet.
Plastered and painted walls, hybrid flooring, power points, lighting, smoke detection and specified hot-water provision complete the practical interior.
A 30sqm garden studio should not be assumed to be permit-free. The approval pathway depends on the proposed use, design and individual property. A building permit will generally be required for a structure of this size.
Whether planning approval or additional requirements apply depends on factors including your planning zone, overlays, lot size, siting, and other property-specific controls.
How you intend to use Ecovista also matters. A garden studio used as a non-residential backyard room is different from a small second dwelling intended for independent residential accommodation.
Backyard Oasis can review your property and help identify the relevant project requirements before construction proceeds, including applicable documentation, engineering and approvals.

Ecovista gives you a generous 30sqm footprint, but the available backyard area is only one part of determining whether it suits your property.
Access, setbacks, existing structures, trees, services, planning controls, and how much outdoor space you want to retain can all influence the placement and project requirements. A floor plan can show you dimensions. Seeing a completed Backyard Oasis space can also help you understand proportions, materials and finishes before making your decision.

If your main priority is a focused home office rather than a larger multipurpose studio, a backyard office pod may be the better fit.

EcoVista FAQs
Ecovista’s 30sqm footprint can suit a range of non-residential uses, including a home office, art or creative studio, hobby room, yoga space or multipurpose backyard room. Your intended use should be discussed early because it can influence the internal layout, electrical requirements, finishes and applicable building or planning requirements.
The current Ecovista specification includes an insulated structural system, double-glazed windows and door, Colorbond exterior, finished interior, hybrid flooring, electrical provisions, kitchen and bathroom fittings and hot-water provision. Exact inclusions, selections and any optional upgrades should be confirmed as part of your individual project scope and quote.
A 30sqm garden studio should generally be expected to require a building permit in Victoria. Exemptions that may apply to certain small non-habitable structures are subject to specific requirements and should not be assumed to apply to Ecovista. The proposed design, use and property conditions should be reviewed before proceeding.
That cannot be determined from the studio model alone. Whether planning approval is required can depend on your property’s planning zone, overlays, lot size, proposed siting, and other applicable controls. Backyard Oasis can review the site and help identify the relevant approval pathway rather than assuming the same requirements apply to every Melbourne property.
A garden studio and a small second dwelling are not the same thing. If you intend to use the structure as independent residential accommodation, the design and approval requirements need to reflect that use. Tell Backyard Oasis how you intend to use the space from the outset so the appropriate product and compliance pathway can be considered.
